The Eastern Belt of India offers a very unique
and unexploited combination of Beaches, Temples, Islands and beautiful
Hills. "The crowning glory of the East", the famous Sun Temple at
Konark and the lavish Jagannath Temple at Puri offer the spiritual and
visual experiences which are par excellence. This Destination is accessible
by Air till Bhubaneshwar, these two Temples can also be reached by train
from India's metropolitan cities, the closest being Calcutta. A few hill
stations, which are popular family destinations, are Darjeeling, Gangtok and
Kalimpong.
"The City of Temples"
It is a well planned modern city of the East and also Capital of Orissa.
Bhubaneshwar can well be made a base for Orissa's Tourist Triangle - The
other two being Puri and Konark. The city has a historic past with monuments
and temples from 3 B.C. to 16 A.D., the famous temples being Lingaraj, Raja
Rai and Mukteshwar.
Fifty five kms from Bhubaneshwar is the beach
town of Puri, one of the Holiest cities for the Hindus known for the
Jagannath Temple. The annual feature is the famous "Rath Yatra" or
Car Festival. An interesting and beautiful sight is fishing boats leaving
for the sea at dawn.
Connected to Puri by the 33 km beach - road
called "The Marine Drive" is Konark, famous for the Sun Temple - a
stunning symbol of religious architecture. The 13th Century Temple was
designed in the shape of a colossal chariot, carrying the Sun God, Surya
pulled by seven horses. The 24 giant wheels of the chariot symbolise the
division of time. Erotic art depicting union of love covers a major part of
the temple area.
Central India has the largest Indian State
Madhya Pradesh. It has a combination of temple towns like Gwalior, Orchha,
Shivpuri & Jhansi which are also famous for old Royal Forts. But what
the state is really proud of, are the two wildlife sanctuaries namely, Kanha
and Bandhavgarh, famous for the White Tiger.
Situated in the northern most part of Madhya
Pradesh is the legendary city, Gwalior, famous for its gigantic 15th century
fort, which tells the tales of valour and chivalry. The fort built on a hill
top dominates the city. It is a good take-off point for excursions to small
but interesting destinations.
Situated at 117 kms south - east of Gwalior is
Shivpuri, the old summer capital. The main road passes through a national
park and one, at times, can see some wildlife on the road. Close to Shivpuri
is a lake with gardens on the perimeter.
Enchantingly beautiful, is the Palace Town of
Orchha (11 kms South of Jhansi). It was once a very powerful state of the
region and was ruled by Bir Singh Deo in the 17th Century who later built
the Jhansi Fort.
Located in the small part of Uttar Pradesh
which projects into Madhya Pradesh, Jhansi is famous for Rani Lakshmi Bai,
The Queen who played a major role in the fight against the British in 1857.
The Jhansi fort offers breath taking views from its ramparts.
It is the most popular destination among
foreign tourists besides Taj Mahal. It is famous for its exotic, beautiful
temples with erotic love sculptures. The 22 remaining temples are located
within an area of 8 sq. kms. The Khajuraho museum is located within the area
of Western Group of temples. The ideal time to see the temples is at
sunrise, as the early morning sun rays fall on the sculptures. Khajuraho is
connected to major cities like Delhi by air and can form a part of an
itinerary partly by road and rail visiting Gwalior, Orchha Shivpuri and
Jhansi.

Ranging between the low hills of Hoshangala and
Mahadeo Hills are the forests of one of India's best wild-life sanctuaries,
"Kanha National Park". Teeming with a large
species of wildlife such as leopard, deer and wild cats, the park is also
famous for the Indian Bison, the Gaur, whose presence makes even a tiger
take a detour. Close to Kanha is the Bandhavgarh National Park
which is the home of the same rare species of wildlife. They are
approachable by road from Jabalpur (overnight train journey from Delhi) or
Nagpur (connected by air from Delhi).
