| J A I P U R - THE PINK CITY |
Jaipur - The Pink City & State capital of
Rajasthan is four hours travel by train from Delhi. Rajasthan (state of India)
is proud of its many heritage properties (Havelis/ Palaces) converted into
Heritage Hotels. Rich Indian History, heritage and craftsmanship drapes this
once sandy state and is the most popular holiday circuit. It could be combined

Circuit. Other famous places are Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner &
Ajmer where the Pushkar Cattle Festival is held every year.
| U D A I P U R - THESE
SERENE VALE |
The beautiful city of lakes, palaces and
fountains, Udaipur is sited on three lakes - Pichola, Fateh Sagar and Udai
Sagar. Magnificent palaces turned into hotels provide a stay that is
unequalled anywhere in the world. The city Palace overlooking lake Pichola has
been converted into a museum. Some French Impressionist painter called Udaipur
the "Versailles" of the desert.
| J O D H P U R - THE DESERT CITY |
Amidst the burning sands of the Thar Desert, is
Jodhpur, the city of forts. Dominating and straddling the rocky eminence is
the Jodhpur Fort, its sheer vertical walls reflecting the strength of its
warrior - builders. The formidable fort is entered through seven gates and
encloses several palaces interspersed with vast courtyards. The walled city is
studded with Lakes, Palaces and Temples.
| J A I S A L M E R -
CITY WITHIN A FORT |
Set in the lonely silence of the desert is
Jaisalmer - an architectural dream. In the lean cobbled alleys of this citadel
city lie a cluster of havelis (mansions) with stone carvings & lattice
work of breath - taking intricacy. There are several Jain Temples in and
around the city. The ideal time to visit Jaisalmer is January and February
when the Annual Desert Festival takes place.
| B I K A N E R - THE CAMEL COUNTRY |
Bikaner, a true desert city in a camel country

ship of the desert is used for pulling heavy carts transporting grains and
working on wells. The wells of Bikaner, built on high plinths with slender
minaret towers are another attraction.
| K O T A - THE CHAMBAL MAGIC |
Along the River Chambal in Southern Rajasthan
lies Kota, providing an amazing contrast of the medieval age and modern
industrialisation. Impressive forts, palaces and temples retain the past glory
of this otherwise industrial heartland of Rajasthan. An old palace overlooks
the Kota Barrage and the commanding Kota Fort provides a splendid view of the
Chambal Valley Project with its many dams.
| B U N D I - THE UNDISCOVERED SPLENDOUR |
Bundi, a small but beautiful town with immense
historic wealth, lies 36 kms from Kota. Bundi is surrounded by the Aravalli
Hills on three sides and is circumscribed by a massive wall with four
gateways. The picturesque lake in the heart of the town is surrounded by
forts, palaces, havelis, temples and intricately carved stone idols and "Chhatris"
(Cenotaphs).
| C H I T T A U R G A R H - THE FORTIFIED PRIDE |
Chittorgarh, the fortified settlement of
Rajasthan, echoes with tales of valour and romance. The Royal Past is evident
from its forts, palaces and "Chhatirs". The Vijay Stambh" or
Tower of Victory, built to mark the victory of Rana Kumbha, is worth a visit.
The palaces and temples of princess - poet Mira and Kalika Mata are the other
attractions.
| B H A R A T P U R - THE WINGED SANCTUARY |
Bharatpur lies 55 kms by road from Agra on the
Jaipur highway. It is connected to other major cities like New Delhi. It is
visited mainly for the Keoladeo "Ghana National Park". Every year
the rare Siberian Cranes come to spend the winter at this Bird Sanctuary. The
fort at Bharatpur is different than other forts as it is void of carvings and
ornamentation. A brief stopover at the sanctuary, enroute to Jaipur is
generally on the itinerary.
Located
along the Western Ghats of the Deccan Plateau are three main States - Gujarat,
Maharashtra and Goa.
This western coast state has close ties with
Mahatma Gandhi. In Ahemdabad the Father of the Nation was born and spent his
early years. In the neighbourhood are Porbander, Diu & Daman and Kutch
region of Gujarat.
Adjoining the Southern end of Gujarat is
Maharashtra (Great Country !) a major gateway for overseas visitors. Mumbai
(Originally Bombay) is the Commercial Capital which provides excellent
connections to other tourist destinations such as Aurangabad & Goa.
Aurangabad is a small town which is famous for the nearby Ajanta & Ellora
Caves, which are a marvel in rock sculpture and a congregation of Temples and
Monasteries.
A city founded by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb as
his viceregal capital in the Deccan, serves as the base to explore the famous
Ajanta & Ellora caves. Paintings and images created by the artists of the
5th Century A.D. at Ajanta illustrate major events in the life of Buddha. The
town of Aurangabad has some interesting
monuments too such as Bibi ka Maqbara and the Pan Chakki (a 17th Century
water-mill). Excursions from Aurangabad include Daulatabad, an old Hindu
Fortress which became the second capital of the Delhi Sultanate in 14th A.D.

Travel
to Leh is recommended between May to September. Visit the famous Hemis
Monastery, Spituk Village, Khardung La (the highest motorable pass in the
world listed in the Guinness Book of World Records) , Nubra Valley, the
ultimate geographic picture and many such areas visited only by a lucky few.
Leh, the main town of the region, is dominated by Sengge Namgyal's nine-storey
Palace, a building in the grand tradition of Tibetan architecture, said to
have inspired the famous Potala in Lhasa, which was built half a century
later. Above it, on Namgyal Tsemo, the peak overlooking the Woen, are the
ruins of the earliest royal residence at Leh, a fort built by King Tashi
Namgyal in the 16th century. The associated temples remain intact, but they
are kept locked except during the morning and evening hours when a monk toils
up the hills from Sankar Gompa to attend to the butter-lamps in front of the
images.

Fort is like a city within a city, having palaces, mosques, bazaars, royal
audience halls, gardens and parks. The most impressive parts of the fort are
the "Diwan-e-Aam" (Hall of Public Audience) and "Diwan-e-Khaas"
(Hall of Private Audience). This excursion into the past takes you to other
interesting places around Agra such as Fatehpur Sikri, the Deserted Ghost City

Fatehpur Sikri due to shortage of water and moved to his new capital, Agra.
There are two main gateways namely the SHAHI DARWAZA and the BULAND
DARWAZA. The tall GATE OF VICTORY is visible for
miles. The Gateway has a "Koranic" inscription. There are many
stairs in front of the gateway enhancing its beauty .
