Bharatpur lies 55 kms by road from Agra on the Jaipur highway. It is connected to other major cities like New Delhi. It is visited mainly for the Keoladeo "Ghana National Park". Every year the rare Siberian Cranes come to spend the winter at this Bird Sanctuary. The fort at Bharatpur is different than other forts as it is void of carvings and ornamentation. A brief stopover at the sanctuary, enroute to Jaipur is generally on the itinerary.

The town of Aurangabad has some interestingAjanta Caves monuments too such as Bibi ka Maqbara and the Pan Chakki (a 17th Century water-mill). Excursions from Aurangabad include Daulatabad, an old Hindu Fortress which became the second capital of the Delhi Sultanate in 14th A.D. This lies enroute to the Ellora cave temples having 34 caves. Located in the small part of Uttar Pradesh which projects into Madhya Pradesh, Jhansi is famous for Rani Lakshmi Bai, The Queen who played a major role in the fight against the British in 1857. The Jhansi fort offers breath taking views from its ramparts.

Ranging between the low hills of Hoshangala and Mahadeo Hills are the forests of one of India's best wild-life sanctuaries, "Kanha National Park". Teeming with a large species of wildlife such as leopard, deer and wild cats, the park is also famous for the Indian Bison, the Gaur, whose presence makes even a tiger take a detour. Close to Kanha is the Bandhavgarh National Park which is the home of the same rare species of wildlife. They are approachable by road from Jabalpur (overnight train journey from Delhi) or Nagpur (connected by air from Delhi).

Situated in the northern most part of Madhya Pradesh is the legendary city, Gwalior, famous for its gigantic 15th century fort, which tells the tales of valour and chivalry. The fort built on a hill top dominates the city. It is a good take-off point for excursions to small but interesting destinations.

S H I V P U R I
Situated at 117 kms south - east of Gwalior is Shivpuri, the old summer capital. The main road passes through a national park and one, at times, can see some wildlife on the road. Close to Shivpuri is a lake with gardens on the perimeter.

Enchantingly beautiful, is the Palace Town of Orchha (11 kms South of Jhansi). It was once a very powerful state of the region and was ruled by Bir Singh Deo in the 17th Century who later built the Jhansi Fort.

Located in the small part of Uttar Pradesh which projects into Madhya Pradesh, Jhansi is famous for Rani Lakshmi Bai, The Queen who played a major role in the fight against the British in 1857. The Jhansi fort offers breath taking views from its ramparts.
